Meet Claire

After spending twelve years in France as a translator and university lecturer in Translation and Interpreting, I moved back to the UK to follow my passion for health and well-being.

My Yoga journey began in 1999 and, after years of deepening my practice, I completed my first Hatha Yoga Teacher Training in 2017. Since then, I’ve earned a second, 200-hour Yoga Teacher Diploma and further qualifications in Kundalini, Restorative and Yin Yoga. I’ve been fortunate to teach Yoga in health clubs, private venues and online, helping others discover the transformative power of this practice.

In addition to Yoga, I’m a qualified CBT therapist, hypnotherapist, meditation teacher, mindfulness practitioner, Pilates instructor, Reiki master, and somatic movement practitioner. I’m also currently training to become a Counsellor-Psychotherapist, as I’m always looking for new ways to support your well-being.

You can find me on LinkedIn (Dr Claire Ellender) and YouTube (Calmer with Claire), where I share guided meditations which you can enjoy at your own pace—perfect for moments of calm and relaxation, any time you need them.

Practices and Therapies

At Claire’s Corner, we offer a range of practices, all of which foster a holistic sense of well-being. While some are offered in group settings, others can be booked on a one-to-one basis.

Bibliotherapy is a therapeutic approach which uses reading to support emotional healing, personal growth, and mental well-being. It involves the guided reading of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or self-help books to help individuals explore feelings, gain new perspectives, and find comfort or insight. Facilitated by a therapist or practiced independently, bibliotherapy can foster empathy, reduce stress, and provide coping strategies for various life challenges. Through identification with characters or reflection on themes, readers may better understand their own experiences. Bibliotherapy promotes emotional resilience and psychological insight through the transformative power of literature.

Chair Yoga is a gentle form of Yoga practised while seated or using a chair for support, making it accessible to people with mobility limitations, seniors, or those new to Yoga. It adapts traditional Yoga poses, focusing on flexibility, strength and stretching, while minimising strain on the body. Chair Yoga includes modified versions of postures such as forward bends, twists, and seated stretches, along with breathwork and relaxation techniques. It promotes better circulation, posture, and stress relief, and can be practised in various settings, including homes and workplaces. Chair Yoga is a safe, inclusive way to experience the benefits of Yoga.

Hatha Yoga is a traditional branch of Yoga which focuses on balancing the body and mind through physical postures [asanas], breath control [pranayama], and meditation. Its goal is to prepare the practitioner for deeper spiritual practices by purifying the body and calming the mind. Hatha can be translated as "force" or "effort," symbolising the balance between opposing forces—sun [ha] and moon [tha]. Hatha Yoga emphasises alignment, flexibility, strength, and relaxation, promoting overall well-being. It is a foundational practice for many modern styles of Yoga, providing a holistic approach to physical health and mental clarity.

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique which uses guided hypnosis to induce a relaxed state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility. In this state, individuals can access their subconscious mind, making it easier to address various issues, such as anxiety, stress, phobias, self-confidence and habits such as overeating. The therapist leads the session, employing techniques to help clients explore thoughts and feelings and foster positive behavioural changes. Hypnotherapy promotes relaxation, self-discovery and healing by facilitating a deeper understanding of the root causes of issues. It is considered a complementary approach to traditional therapy, enhancing overall mental and emotional well-being.

Kundalini Yoga is a spiritual and energetic form of Yoga designed to awaken the dormant energy [kundalini] at the base of the spine. Through a combination of dynamic postures [asanas], breathwork [pranayama], chanting [mantras], meditation, and hand gestures [mudras], it aims to elevate this energy through the chakras, or energy centres, to achieve higher consciousness. Kundalini Yoga emphasises inner transformation, increasing awareness and creativity. It seeks to unlock human potential by harmonising body, mind, and spirit, leading to self-realisation and heightened mental clarity.

Meditation is a mental practice that involves focusing attention and awareness to achieve a state of calm, clarity, and inner peace. By concentrating on the breath, a mantra, or an object, meditation helps quieten the mind, reduce stress, and enhance mindfulness. Regular practice promotes emotional regulation, improved focus, and a deeper connection to the present moment. Beyond mental benefits, meditation is known to improve physical health by lowering blood pressure, reducing anxiety, and fostering overall well-being. It cultivates inner stillness and a balanced state of mind. LINK TO YOUTUBE CHANNEL

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the current moment, with a non-judgmental awareness of thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. It involves observing experiences as they arise without reacting or becoming overwhelmed by them. Rooted in Buddhist traditions, mindfulness can be cultivated through meditation or integrated into daily activities such as breathing, eating or walking. Practising mindfulness helps to reduce stress, increase focus, and improve emotional regulation. It promotes a deeper connection to the present, fostering clarity, compassion, and a greater sense of well-being. Mindfulness enhances overall mental and emotional balance by encouraging acceptance and self-awareness.

Pilates is a low-impact exercise method focused on core strength, flexibility, and body awareness. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, it emphasises controlled movements which engage the body's core muscles, including the abdomen, lower back, hips, and pelvic floor. At Calmer with Claire, our Pilates is mat-based. The practice promotes better posture, alignment, and overall body balance while enhancing muscular endurance and flexibility. Suitable for all fitness levels, Pilates is often used for rehabilitation, injury prevention, and improving athletic performance, fostering a strong, agile, and well-aligned body.

Reiki is a Japanese healing technique that promotes relaxation and stress reduction through gentle touch and energy transfer. Practitioners use their hands to channel energy [ki] to the recipient, facilitating healing on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. Sessions typically involve the client sitting or lying down fully clothed while the practitioner lightly places their hands on or near the body. Reiki aims to balance the body's energy, enhance well-being, and support the body's natural healing processes. It is often used to alleviate pain, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of calm and inner peace, making it a complementary therapeutic practice. The benefits of Reiki are proven by scientific research (REF) and the practice is now used in numerous, reputable healthcare establishments, notably… (REF).

Restorative Yoga is a gentle, therapeutic form of Yoga which focuses on deep relaxation and stress relief. It involves passive postures held for extended periods, often supported by props such as blankets, bolsters, and blocks, to promote comfort and alignment. Unlike more active styles, Restorative Yoga encourages the body to relax fully, facilitating healing by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. This practice soothes the mind, reduces tension, and promotes emotional balance. Ideal for all levels, it is especially beneficial for recovery, managing stress, and enhancing mindfulness. The slow pace of Restorative Yoga allows for deep breathing, introspection, and a profound sense of calm and renewal.

Somatic Movement is a body-centred approach to movement which emphasises awareness and the internal experience of bodily sensations. It encourages individuals to explore their own movement patterns, fostering a deeper connection between the mind and body. Through gentle, intentional movements, participants are encouraged to release tension, improve posture, and enhance flexibility, and to enjoy improved emotional and physical well-being. Techniques employed include slow, mindful motions, guided imagery, and breath awareness, helping to cultivate self-awareness and presence. Somatic movement is beneficial for stress relief, rehabilitation, and personal growth, allowing individuals to reconnect with their bodies and express themselves authentically through movement.

Sound Therapy uses vibrations and frequencies to promote relaxation, healing, and emotional well-being. Instruments like Tibetan singing bowls, traditionally made from a blend of metals, produce rich, harmonic sounds that help reduce stress and balance energy. Crystal bowls, crafted from pure quartz, emit clear, high-frequency tones believed to align with specific chakras (energy centres), enhancing meditation and energy flow. Both types of bowls create resonant sound waves that can entrain brainwaves, leading to deep states of calm and mindfulness. Sound therapy is increasingly used in holistic healing practices to support mental clarity, emotional balance, and physical relaxation through vibrational resonance.

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced, meditative style of Yoga which targets deep connective tissues, such as ligaments, joints, and fascia, to enhance flexibility and circulation. Poses are typically held for 3-5 minutes, allowing for deep stretching and release of tension. Unlike more dynamic practices, Yin Yoga emphasises stillness, patience, and surrender, promoting a mindful connection to the body and breath. It complements more active styles of Yoga by improving joint mobility and releasing stored emotional or physical blockages. Yin Yoga also encourages a sense of calm and introspection, making it a powerful tool for stress reduction and inner balance.

Yoga Nidra, or "yogic sleep," is a guided meditation practice which induces deep relaxation while maintaining conscious awareness. Practised lying down, it guides practitioners through different stages, including body scanning, breath awareness, and visualisation, allowing the body to rest while the mind remains alert. This meditative state taps into the subconscious, promoting healing, stress relief, and inner calm. Yoga Nidra is known for its ability to reduce tension and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and restore emotional balance. Often considered as effective as several hours of sleep, it allows for profound physical, mental, and emotional rejuvenation in a short time.
